Foster families are the best

I am simply amazed at the size of heart this family has.  In less than a year from becoming approved foster parents, this family has given their love, time and home to 4 very young kids from two different families (including a baby!) and she still makes time to volunteer almost daily at our elementary school and is super active in our PTO.  How she finds the drive and energy is beyond me.  If it were me, I think I would have found a new best friend named Ben and Jerry’s!  Thank goodness for families that give so willingly.  The love they are sharing with their foster kids will make a difference in these sweet kids lives more than we could ever possibly know.

Quick share ~Charlotte Family Photography by Carrie Scruggs~

I’ve gotta make this quick since I have to leave in just a minute to go meet a sweet little family that we are doing a charity session for through Inspiration Through Art.

If you guys haven’t met her personally – here’s my wonderful friend/assistant and her beautiful family!

XOXO  Love you Chaeli!

Who knew……. ~Charlotte family photography by Carrie Scruggs Photography~

One of the best compliments I have ever received:

“We all had a lot of fun, can’t wait to do it again-who would have thought pictures could be so much fun.”

Thanks LA!  Chaeli and I had a great time with your family too!

Warning….. visual overload about to happen.

As any photographer will tell you…. taking pictures of our own kids is just about the HARDEST thing we ever set out to do!  It just must be something about having to be the mom and the photographer or maybe it’s just that our kids are tired of having their photos taken that they just refuse to cooperate?  Or maybe it’s just because they can feel our neediness and want?

Either way… IT IS HARD!  So I have no idea what I was thinking when I decided (at the last minute) to not only take photos of my kids WITH NO HELP…. but I also took the dog!    I shot at 5:30 (not an ideal time of day) on a busy road so there was tons of traffic passing by as we sat and tried to take some photos.  Wowza…. it was NUTS!

My little bear is now 1 and enjoyed his first lollipop though (ok – it was my attempt to keep that hat on him).

So here you go…. a little slideshow journey with my 3 boys and our dog!

babies babies everywhere ~Baby photography by Carrie Scruggs Photography~

I wasn’t lying when I said that there are a TON of babies being born right now!  So much fun for us over here – meeting all these new tiny people!

I had a great time meeting sweet little baby boy “A” this past weekend.  He slept for me like a CHAMP but from what I understand…. his parents did all the prep work the night before since he did almost zero sleeping that night!  I think he might actually hold the record for the fasted newborn photo session – I was in and out of there in 2 hours!  If you didn’t know this already – newborns take me about 3 hours to photograph since we do both awake shots and sleeping shots and we of course need to give our models a break somewhere in there to chow!

Even though they had little sleep that night before, mom and dad of baby “A” had lots of fun hats and things for us to use in his photo session.  Can you tell dad is a sports fan?  He has a baby photo in this same NY Yankees cap!

I hope you all are getting plenty of rest now!  Enjoy your new little one!

Boys spit….. amongst other things

I have 3 boys so there is always some form of boy grossness going on.  Either they are spitting, farting, asking you to smell their stinky feet, making arm fart noises, snorting… you name it… we got it all!  Well as it goes…. it looks like most all boys do the same stuff 🙂

They were such great sports about the whole thing  – I mean it was pretty chilly out!  I asked the dad if he thought we were crazy to be out there at the fireplace from hell to take photos but he was so super easy going – he was game for anything!  His personality showed in the photos too because I don’t think he took even one single bad photo!  Even with all his great photos – it would be hard to top this super cutie photo of his beautiful wife!  I expect to see photos when you get that office where you plan on displaying this photo of her!

Thanks again to the “F” family for a super fun photo session and I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season!

Merry Christmas…… or is it????

Every year we set out to do our annual family picture so that we can share a little “Scruggs Cheer” with the rest of our friends and family out there on our Christmas card list.  Every year I promise myself and my family that I won’t act crazy…. I won’t yell… and no one will cry.  Every year…. I FAIL!

Yep – I break every single “tip” that I tell all my clients NOT TO DO!  I don’t know why… I just can’t seem to help myself.  It’s like this other person comes and takes over my body……I even said I was going to have a glass of wine before we set out to do our photos and I was simply too rushed to do it!

This year topped all other years though.  I thought I would be clever and try a new exciting location – one that I hadn’t taken anyone else to.  It had a fireplace in the middle of a field.  Fun right!?!  NOPE.  Of course I didn’t take the time to really scope out the location ahead of time since it was “just” my family.  Well, well, well…. hell is what it was more like.  Poor poor Chaeli.

We pull up – oh did I mention that the baby has already poo’d through his outfit (and no I did not plan on a back up) so I had to run and get him a new outfit seconds before leaving the house (so he no longer coordinates with the rest of the family)…..oh yeah  AND  there was POO on my shirt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  No time to change so I roll up the sleeve like a real trooper (you know I’ve been trying to figure out these outfits for WEEKS) and go on.  I’m not happy.  My husband is telling me to chill out because just moments before…. he had told me that he liked my “other outfit” better (an outfit I had worn to get my hair done in, that did not go with everyone elses outfits…as we are walking out the door).  A few not so choice words I am certain have left my mouth by this time.

So we pull up, at just the right time of day…for the PERFECT light and we see that there are piles of black trash bags full of God only knows what, an abandoned cat carrier…. and a few dirty diapers.  Deep breath…. we can work past this right?  Of course my husband asks “do you have a backup location in mind?”  NOT HELPING!

Chaeli arrives and can immediately feel me freaking out.  We push on, even though I’m already telling Chaeli that we should just leave.  She’s trying to find the bright side to this location… so we move on.  We go over and try to find the best spot.  I’m still mad.  Mad at myself, mad at my husband and just mad.

We set up for the first shot – no good place to stand/sit because it is just pure rubble around us.  Broken glass everywhere, empty beer cans, jagged rusty metal poking out everywhere.  My kids are of course touching EVERYTHING!  So we stand near this dreamboat of a fireplace.  The light is PERFECT… my kids are not.  S asked if he could wear this skull ring.  I said “of course”…. just so I could get him out of my hair at the moment.  Well…. now my kid looks like he’s throwing gang signs as he apparently tries to show off his ring in all the photos.

As Chaeli is trying to get all of us to smile – she leans down on a piece of fur that we have no idea what it ever belonged to.  She’s climbing over other piles of rubble -just going above and beyond to try and help me get this family photo!  I so owe you Chaeli!!!!!!!!!!!!  Oh and the whole time we are swatting away the hugest swarm of mosquitos I’ve ever seen. (That’s what O was doing here)

Even though D’s expression really sums up how I felt about the whole thing

Chaeli seriously accomplished the unbelievable by getting us this fabulous photo for our, what turned out to be, wonderful Christmas card

And of course I have to share more since this was an EPIC holiday session for our family:

Merry Christmas from my family to yours!
